As single women, we don't have to wait until we get married, have kids, or get a nice promotion before we can start having real fun in our lives. The kind of fun that matters to us. There are myriads of fun activities you can do as a single woman - the ones you don't have to budget the whole year for and won't break your bank account.
The “How to Be Single” movie taught us how to enjoy our single years without dreading it. In this blog I am going to show you how you can gracefully glaze through your single years. How to respond to your great-aunt’s most dreaded question during a family function like a girlboss that you are, when she and her neighbourhood friends look at you underneath their oversized spectacles; “So, Celeste...” When are we meeting the special man in your life. I am not getting any younger, you know? I need some real dolls to play with.” If you are gracefully enjoying your single years, you will not flinch when those questions come. It's the most wonderful time of your life, and it goes by in a blink of an eye! Without any more suspense here are 10 activities you can enjoy as a single woman that will leave you feeling more alive and good about yourself. Let’s dive into our singlehood activities and enjoy it while it lasts!
1. Investing in your own wellness through self-care
Let's be honest girls. We've all come across the hashtags #selfcare #selflove #medoingme. Alright, I’m not sure about that last hashtag. I'm pretty sure many of you are tired of hearing those phrases. They sound so cliché, right? My intention is to remind you, my fellow singles, that although it can be exhausting to hear those words, we must take them seriously if we want to have a good time during our single years. Self-care and self-love are where it all begins, and it begins with you!
My version of self-care and self-love will be different from another woman’s version of self-care and self-love. As for me, my pretty ladies, I really enjoy an early fitness exercise after spending some quiet time in prayer and meditation. Then, I go and prepare myself a delicious breakfast. My morning routine is the only thing that keeps me going throughout my day. There are many ways to practice self-care through various habits and activities. Think about a serious morning and night skin routine with quality skin products that are suitable for your skin. When was the last time you went for a skin analysis and monthly facial with a trusted dermatologist or cosmetologist? Maintaining beautiful skin requires a good night's rest. Eye bags, puffy eyes, and breakouts can be reduced with a good 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. You could be doing yourself a disservice if you only rely on quick fixes like expensive creams. Begin making positive little habits a part of your daily routine. I give you six months; you will start to see results in no time.
If you are fond of a beauty spa, book a massage and a full pedicure and affirm that you are worthy of all the love in the world. Do you drink water when you are only thirsty? If you do that, you'd already be dehydrated. Prepare a 2-litre gallon of water and place it in front of your desk, whatever your work office situation is, as a reminder to drink your water throughout the day. You can make it look interesting by adding some fruits or vegetables in it, like slices of lemon, cucumber, apples, berries, or ginger. Health is the new wealth! Do you prepare your own lunch or depend on the workplace cafe to meet your nutritional needs? Don’t let your health be at the mercy of someone else. Be your own agent and act for yourself instead of being acted upon by stocking your pantry with healthy and nutritious food. You can pack different lunch boxes and fill them with your favourite lunch and snacks, such as sliced fresh fruits, dried fruits, peanuts, homemade smoothies, and don't forget your two-litre gallon of fresh H2O.
My single ladies, there are lots of ways you can exercise self-care without spending lots of money. Start small and gradually grow from there. What are you waiting for? Hit that florist's shop and buy yourself some flowers and a good chocolate. Curl yourself up on the sofa with your favourite drink, a robe, and fluffy socks. Soak yourself in the quietness of the evening while watching your favourite Netflix movie. You are worth it! As you practice self-care, it becomes easier every day; so, start today.
2. Why a Book Club might be good for you
Alright, I get it. This activity is a little bit of a touchy subject after the introduction of digital media where everything is at the touch of a button on our mobiles and laptops. Today, the world has become inundated with online reading tools. We have e-books that we can buy online, AI and ChatGPT. If we are looking for specific information, Amazon’s Kindle books, the list of digital reading tools is endless. However, I’m a traditional girl. I still have faith in printed magazines and genuine books from my local bookstore. If bookstores are still in existence, then there is still a demand for physical books, correct? Wrong? Alright, we'll do the right thing for the sake of my blog.
My beautiful single ladies, if you are a traditional girl like me, it would be good for you to stay true to yourselves and not be swirled around by every doctrine that enters the market – Alright, that was a scriptural quote from Doctrine and Covenants. If you’re an introverted bookworm like yours truly, why don't you join your local book club where you can share your latest reads and add to your intellectual capacity, my intelligent foxes. This will be good for your mental health and add years to your life. Someone whispered to me that lifelong learning is key to longevity. As someone who has been learning for a lifetime, I can honestly affirm this belief. There is nothing that will make you attractive like adding to your mental capacity. It improves your mood and encourages you to be open-minded, accept differences, and become a great person overall. Don’t forget sexy. Have you ever seen those spectacles ads with ladies wearing them like a boss? If that doesn’t look sexy to you. I don’t know which planet you come from. So, do not blame me when you leave the singleton town as soon as you embark on increasing your mental capacity by reading more books through your local book club with other like-minded girlbosses as you! Nothing screams a cultural girl like a living room with stacks of good books.
3. Embracing solo adventures
I know you are thinking, how will this activity not break my bank balance? I read your mind, you little mermaid... remember to keep an open mind. You can save up the entire year if you plan to travel outside of your country to ensure that expenses like flight costs, hotel accommodations, and excursions are well covered. ...However, there are many local places you can still travel to without spending a lot of money. You can explore a new city within your own country and plan every three months to spend a weekend away exploring a new city, different culture, language, culinary cuisine experiences of that city, and their way of living. With this adventure, you will be able to expand your mind and come back refreshed, revitalized, and feeling like a new person.
Open your mind to getting out of your comfort zone and embark on sightseeing in a different city. Plan your trip well by booking a travel guide who will drive you around whether as a group of visitors or a solo trip with just the fabulous you and the travel guide. Enjoy different weather than the one you are accustomed to in your own city. Learn how locals communicate and greet each other, make new friends, and visit beaches in coastal cities. If you need some company from time to time, ask about group dining experiences from your travel guide, join other singletons and make new friends. Who knows, perhaps you could score yourself a date and realize that your soulmate was hiding in a different city, so what are you waiting for? Go on, explore, and enjoy yourself; bungee jumping and canoe activities are waiting for you. As the saying goes, you will only live once!
4. Step into fun by joining a dance class
If you have two left feet like me, you might feel like skipping this activity, but before you scroll right down, please hear me out, beautiful! Signing up for a dance class might give you that much needed boost of confidence and take you out of your comfort zone. It will help you get in touch with your feminine side. So, put on your sexy cat heels, a feminine dress that holds you in all the right places, and hit the dance floor like a beautiful maven that you are. You can find local dance classes on google search engine or at your nearest supermarket classified ads. Who knows, maybe you could meet a few eligible bachelors who are just as cultural as you, not to mention, those sweaty sessions do make you look irresistibly hot and will keep you fit and healthy. Dancing is a perfect way to let off steam of a long day and breathe in all those positive vibrations.
5. Nourishing your spiritual life
When you hear the word spirituality, you might be tempted to think New Age and Veganism, meditating like Buddha, or giving up your entire life and becoming a monk in the mountains. Nope, this is not the kind of spiritual nourishment we will be discussing here - now you can sigh a breath of relief, Haasa!!! Pretty lady, your spiritual life is as important as taking a bath every morning. It encompasses everything that you are as a person and daughter of the Heavenly Father. Disclaimer: I’m a Christian, this is how I address my father. I could say Universe, Energy Source, Creator. All these titles that make most people comfortable and socially acceptable, to me He’s as close as my dearest Daddy.
Alright, let’s dive into the subject of nourishing our spirituality. What does it mean to nourish yourself spiritually? Before we came on earth, we were spirit children of our Heavenly Father. We are always connected to them (Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother) through our spirits. We wanted to become like them and experience having a body and voila a plan of happiness was set in motion and spirit children were created in their image and became living souls. Therefore, fellow princesses and heiresses to the Kingdom of our Father in Heaven, you are a Spirit first, and this is how we nourish our spiritual lives. We pray to our Father in Heaven and invite him into our lives and daily activities. We commune with our father through scriptures and faith-based books, podcasts, or magazines. Another way we can nourish our spiritual life is through meditation to listen to the whispers of the Holy Spirit, do yoga (which we’ll be discussing below), and even during our exercise sessions. We show appreciation by nourishing the very image we are made of - our bodies, which symbolize the temple in which His Almighty wants to dwell – and not just dwell, but be comfortable in it. There are many ways we can nourish our spirituality which help us reconnect with our Source, okay here I go using Source as another name for the Heavenly Father. Yes! He is our dear Spirit Source. Why don't you revere Him today by remembering who you are, His Spirit child, made in His own image!
6. Participating in charity work can enrich your life
The activity we will be discussing here is interconnected with nourishing our spirituality – charity work! The act of volunteering has been associated with feelings of accomplishment, altruism, and purpose. Most people realize their life purpose, reconnect with their true selves through participation in charity work. Volunteers testify to healing from grief, finding new connections and a sense of belonging and community by doing charity work. If you don’t know where to find charity organizations, you can start at your local church and ask about charity activities that interest you the most.
If you love children and elderly people you can participate in visiting children’s hospitals, like those struggling with cancer, orphanage facilities and homes for the elderly. You can volunteer to teach children in your community a new skill, for example, English or Math lessons. If you are into sports and fitness, you can open a local netball or yoga classes. This activity will help you connect with your inner child and heal your own upbringing issues like spending time with the little ones. Children are full of light, love and forgiveness. Spending time with the silver-greyed hair men and women, will equip you with wisdom to face your own life’s challenges as they share their own life triumphs, successes and even their life regrets. Do you have a passion for animals? You can consider adopting one furry friend, a cat or a dog and even my adorable one, a rabbit! Personally, I enjoyed participating in charity work for abused women and children. It’s uplifting, inspiring, and a worthy cause. Spending time with these courageous women and their children gives hope that we live in a society that still cares and is in touch with real social issues that affect us all as women across all races.
7. Finding balance through Yoga
I understand that practicing yoga may not be for everyone, who really wants to flex like a child... Janelle Monae showed us in her song, “Yoga” that every woman can do yoga. During our years of growing up, we might have developed tight muscles along the way. Although I still don't understand why I have to do a downward facing dog and child pose to release tension in my muscles. One thing I can promise you my pretty ladies, is that regularly stretching your muscles might be all you need to ease tensions in your body, relieve stress, and feel a lot calmer, ready to face any obstacles that life’s little nuances may throw at you. I experience a sense of relief, happiness, and spiritual alignment with my inner child after each yoga session.
One thing I love about yoga, is that it’s as flexible as the act itself. We have a choice to enjoy those steamy reflex sessions in the comfort of our own lounge, bedroom, or in your garden as you let that morning sun hit your forehead, or even at the beach! If you are a social butterfly, go ahead and sign up for a class and enjoy stretching those muscles in the company of other fabulous, lovely ladies like you! Janelle Monae was not lying when she said, “Bend it never break it, baby watch and I'ma show ya, stretching on my cash, got my money doing yoga...”
8. Attending a cooking class can spark creativity
If you are like me and love a good culinary experience, but somehow you don’t know how you missed those essential cooking sessions with your mommy, or perhaps you were just not into it. I mean it’s more enjoyable to eat than slaving all afternoon behind the stove, correct? With my eyes closed because of embarrassment, I somehow missed those crucial growing up moments when my elder sister and my mom would be cooking for the whole family when “Miss Thing”, aka, top student of her class only cared about books and digging herself into every homework. You might be tempted to think oh, she loved her schoolwork, sweet! I hate to break it to you, she disliked cooking with the same passion, and now she’s paying the price.
But we have the power to rewrite history, don’t we? Today, I am inviting you to a great experience of your life! Cooking is amazing and knowing how to cook delicious meals is a cherry on top! It will help you get in touch with your feminine self, and nothing screams self-love like preparing your own healthy meals. It increases your creativity, and you will find yourself inventing new dishes you never heard of. Come on, my independent foxes, let’s dive in together and sign up for a cooking class. You can even get yourself a nice cookbook or watch Pinterest videos. I promise you after a few consistent cooking sessions, Jamie Oliver will have nothing on you, as you whoop your fifteen minutes meals in no time!
9. Learning a new skill will boost your confidence and enrich your life
Learning a new skill is like learning how to ride a bike. The more you practice it, the better you become. Learning a new skill might be another thing to tick off your bucket list. For this exercise, Imma let you travel down memory lane when you were still an innocent little child. What interested you the most as a little kid? Perhaps you were interested in creating pottery, painting, photography, cooking, or fashion... Whatever hobby sparked your interest as a little child, before adulting, responsibilities, raising children, work deadlines, and assignments came into the picture can still be ignited. I know that there is still fire living within every one of us, waiting to be unleashed. Nothing is stopping us now from pursuing our passions, something that will keep the spark alive and make you become interested in life again. Go on my passionate ladies, the world is your oyster and Earth a blank canvas ready to be filled with colourful imaginations that are in your hearts!!!
10. Experimenting with singles group dining can be fun and refreshing
On the activity of travelling solo, we touched a little bit on singles dining. I personally love this activity because it will help you enhance your communication skills, hone your social acumen and curb any social anxiety you might have had. There is no activity that will make you see people at their best like when there is food in front of them. It’s a perfect way to increase your social network and meet people you might share similar interests with. Food has the power to unite people in a positive way. There is laughter, good jokes, meets and greets, networking, and learning about other people’s cultures and diversity. It’s also a healthy way to learn about the opposite sex without putting on a facade or your best foot forward because you’re not on a formal date, right? So, my gorgeous ladies, let’s go, loosen up and get ready to mingle with other fabulous singletons, who love life just like you do!
Final Thoughts
We have finally come to the end of our blog. Disclaimer! This was my first official blog, and I enjoyed every single minute sharing these beautiful tips with you, my gorgeous ladies. If you have more tips to add, please share with us! I am looking forward to becoming a close-knit community with all of you. I know other beauty mavens would love to hear from you!
